Having your website load quickly is essential. We've all visited a site that has taken ages to load and ultimately decided that it is not worth the wait. Obviously you don't want this to happen to you! Especially if you have spent ages getting the site just the way you want it, it would feel like all your hard work went to waste.
In this very short guide, we're briefly going to go over a few tips on how to get the most out of your site.
Beware of caching plugins: Although caching plugins promise to reduce the load time for a page, in our experience that's not always the case. They can actually create more calls to the database, which in fact makes the page load slower.
Be careful about what themes and plugins you use: Not only is there the worry of malicious content and huge security glitches, but if you end up with a buggy plugin it's not going to do anything for your site and speed.
Read reviews: Sites like WordPress.org have hundreds of themes and plugins, which have reviews. Why not check them out first, if a fair amount of users complain about them slowing the site or being glitchy, stay away.
Do a clear out: If you have applications or plugins that you aren't really using any more, then get rid if them. Not only will they potentially slow down your site, they heighten your risk of a security breach if you aren't updating them.
Use sparingly: Avoid putting too many plugins on one page, especially social media ones. X (previously Twitter) widgets for example are dynamic, meaning that they are constantly pulling data from X (previously Twitter) - a few of these on a page and your load times will take a huge hit.
Update: Just like apps on your phone, plugins will have updates. Make sure you have the latest version.
Security: A security plugin is essential, it can also be set to do auto updates and other things too, to ensure that everything on your site is up to date. Also it reduces the chances of your site being hacked, and having downtime while you sort your site out.
