WinSCP

Last updated on by Freeola Support

Welcome to the Freeola Internet customer support pages. This guide is designed to help with uploading website files via FTP using WinSCP for any Freeola hosted website. For more internet help topics please visit our main Support Page.

In order to upload files to any Freeola hosted website you will need to access your Freeola webspace via FTP. Most, if not all, web design programs feature an element of FTP uploading but it is always advisable, and more stable, to upload using one of many FTP clients available. This page gives brief instructions on one of these, WinSCP.

Please Note

This guide was created using WinSCP Version 6.1.2 as a reference. While other versions of this software will use almost the same methods for uploading files to a webserver, there may be some small text or graphical differences.

The WinSCP Software offers two graphical views, Commander and Explorer, these instructions will be suitable for both interfaces with only some slight graphical differences between them.

  1. If you have not done so already, download the software from an official source. This software is fully available for free online directly from the developers.

  2. As part of the setup you will require your FTP information from within your MyFreeola Control Panel. Once logged in, select Websites & Hosting then your hosting service from the options that appear.

If you require assistance in locating this information, please contact Freeola Support who will be happy to assist.

  3. In order to connect to your webspace, click the New Tab option within the main content section of the software. This will open the Login window.

  4. If you have no saved websites within your program, New Site will automatically be selected. If it is not, select if from the left-hand pane.

  5. Under the Session heading:

    • File Protocol - This needs to be FTP.

    • Encryption - Left as No Encryption.

    • Host Name - The FTP server name should be entered here. The format of this will vary depending on the hosting service you have with Freeola.

    • Port Number - 21.

    • User Name - The FTP username for your Freeola webspace. This will start with cp, vip or sr.

    • Password - The FTP password for the above username.

    • Anonymous Login - This option should NOT be ticked.

  6. Once you have entered all of the information, click Login. If everything has been entered correctly, WinSCP will now display the contents of your webspace root.

  7. If you are using the Explorer interface, all of your files and folders will be displayed in the main window of the software, with the folder tree within the, smaller, left-hand pane.

  8. If you are using the Commander interface, the left-hand side of the software will display your local files and folders and the right-hand side will show the remote (web server) files.
    WinSCP Commander Interface

  9. To transfer your files, 'drag-and-drop' them into the section for the remote server. Regardless of which interface option you are using, this will be the rightmost pane.

  10. For the Explorer interface, you will need to drag these files from an open folder on your computer. Commander interface users can drag their files and folders from the left-hand pane to the right.

  11. If this is the first time uploading (or if you have chosen to enable this feature permanently) you will receive a pop-up window confirming this action. Click OK to start the transfer.
    WinSCP Upload Window

In order for your website to display, your files will need to be uploaded to the public_html folder (htdocs folder for VIP and Standard Hosting services).
  12. If successful, your files will now appear within the remote pane and, if uploaded correctly, will appear online. If you are finished uploading files you can close the program, as you would with any other program, by clicking the red cross in the top hand corner.
