In 2013 MoveableType moved away from an Open Source Project to become proprietary software. As such, this guide is only applicable for outdated and unsupported software, and something we would no longer recommend using on our, or any other, hosting server.
However, this guide will remain available for reference purposes.
Welcome to the Freeola Internet customer support pages. This guide is designed to give some general information about installing MovableType using a Freeola MySQL Database. For more internet help topics please visit our main Support Page.
In order to install and use MovableType, or any other Content Management System, you will be required to have purchased a Freeola MySQL Web Hosting service.
Use a Web browser to connect to the Movable Type Download page and follow instructions there to download the release file to your personal computer.
Extract the Movable Type files from the release file into a new folder on your local computer. You will need a program that can uncompress and extracts tar files.
Start your FTP program and connect to your Web server using your FTP user name and password. If you are not sure of these, all the information needed can be found within the My Websites link within your MyFreeola account.
Copy the mt-static directory from your local computer to the htdocs directory on the Web server.
Open the cgi-bin (cgi-shl for standard hosting customers) directory and make a new directory within it named mt. Copy all of the other Movable Type installation folders and files to the mt directory.
Make sure all the Movable Type cgi files (files ending with .cgi) in the mt directory on the Web server have execute permission (755). You should be able to select these files and check their properties within an FTP client such as Filezilla.
Make sure the support directory found within your mt-static directory is writable by your web server (Permissions to 755 again).
Start a Web browser and run the installation wizard by connecting to the following Web address: http://domainname/cgi-bin/mt/mt.cgi, where "domainname" is the domain name for your blog. Follow the instructions provided by the installation wizard, as part of this installation you will be asked to enter your MySQL information as listed below.
Please Note: This information assumes that you are using FreedomSQL. If you are using VIP SQL please refer to the section further down the page.
- Database Server which will be mysql.freeola.net.
- Database Name will be the same number that you used for the MySQL User Name.
- Username will be the number in the form sr0XXXXXX to which your MySQL has been assigned.
- Password will be the corresponding password to the account.
Note for VIP SQL Customers:
Due to the nature of the VIP SQL product some of the information entered will be different from that listed above. Please find below the necessary changes:
Database Server which will be localhost.
Database Name will be the same number that you used for the MySQL User Name.
Username will be the name you have given to the relevant database.
Password will be the password you have given to the relevant database.
If you do not have a note of this information you are able to view all of these settings from within the VIP Web Hosting link within your MyFreeola account.
Once you have successfully entered the information required you will be prompted to create, and set-up your blog interface that will allow you to write, create and edit your blog posts.
