TPLink TD-W9960 FTTP Setup Guide

Last updated on by Freeola Support

Welcome to the Freeola Internet customer support pages. This guide is designed to help with setting up a TPLink Router to work with Freeola FTTP (Full Fibre) Broadband services. For more internet help topics please visit our main Support Page.

While this guide was written using the model TD-W9960 as a base, these instructions should still be correct for other models of the hardware, albeit with some slight wording and visual differences.

Please Note

While this router is compatible with FTTP services, the WAN port will only provide a maximum speed of 100 Mbps downstream. If your connection download speed is rated higher than this (and you wish to make use of it) you will need to use an alternative router.

In order to configure your router you will need to be connected to it either wirelessly or via an Ethernet cable (a wired connection is recommended). Once connected, open your chosen internet browser (Firefox, Edge, Chrome, Safari etc.).

Before Getting Started

Please ensure that you have your router connected to your modem through the Port 4/WAN socket on your TP-Link. The device through which you are configuring your hardware can be connected through any of the other 3 LAN Ports.

Setting the Device to Router Mode
  1. In the address bar of your web browser enter the default IP address of the router, http://192.168.1.1 or http://tplinkmodem.net/.
If you are unsure of where the address bar is on your software, the keyboard shortcut of Ctrl+L is widely used to highlight this field.

  2. After logging in you will be presented with the router homepage, from the Top Navigation Menu select Advanced.
    TP-Link Advanced Tab

If you have not logged into the router previously, you will be prompted to set a new Admin password and the Quick Setup Wizard will automatically start. After setting your new password you can return to Main Menu by clicking Exit in the wizard, or the Advanced tab described above.
  3. On the Advanced tab, select Operation Mode from the left-hand menu then enable the Wireless Router Mode option.
    TP-Link Wireless Router Mode
    Click Save to apply.

  4. Your router will now reboot, this may take a few moments. Once rebooted, you will need to log back into the router as described above.

If you have chosen to connect your device to the router via Port 4, you will not be able to log back in until connecting via a different Port.
  5. After logging in, select Basic from the Top Menu if not selected already, then Internet from the left-hand side.
    TP-Link Internet Menu

  6. This will open a page showing just the PPP Connection information.

    • VLAN Tag - Do Not Enable

    • Connection Type - PPPoE

    • Username - Enter your Freeola supplied Connection Username, which will be in the format of [email protected].

    • Password - Enter your Freeola supplied Connection Password.

    TP-Link PPP Information
Click Save to save your changes.
  7. Your router should now attempt to connect using the supplied settings and, if correct, your connection will come online.

To Configure Wireless Settings
  1. In the address bar of your web browser enter the default IP address of the router, http://192.168.1.1 or http://tplinkmodem.net/.
If you are unsure of where the address bar is on your software, the keyboard shortcut of Ctrl+L is widely used to highlight this field.

  2. If you would like to enable or disable your Wireless Network or change the SSID or Wireless Password, click Wireless from the left-hand menu.

  3. The page will update to display only the WiFi credentials for the router.

    • 2.4GHz Wireless - Enable if you would like a wireless network.

    • Network Name (SSID) - Enter the desired name for your Wireless Network.

    • Password - Enter your desired 'WiFi' password.

    TPLink Wireless Information
Click Save to store your changes.
