Installing WordPress with Freeola

Welcome to the Freeola Internet customer support pages. This guide is designed to help with installing WordPress 2.7 on Freeola's VIP hosting package. If you have subscribed to Freeola's Unlimited VIP Hosting and MySQL database you easily meet the minimum requirements for WordPress.

WordPress is a blog publishing application. It is a tool to allow you to publish with ease, blogging websites which look highly professional. It is an Open Source project which means that there are many people world wide modifying and using WordPress. This also means there is a lot of scope for customisation. Furthermore there is an equally large community for support and advice.

Important:
In order to install and use WordPress, or any other blogging software, you will be required to have purchased and have access to a Freeola SQL service. This service costs as little as £2 per month for VIP Hosting customers. MySQL is a database utility that is primarily used for dynamic websites. A database of this sort is required to store your content for the installation and running of WordPress.

This guide is written on the assumption that you have signed up for Freeola VIP Hosting plus MySQL, however this guide will also be applicable for those customers using the MySQL service on our free hosting servers.

1. Log-in to your MyFreeola account.

2. Select "VIP Web Hosting" from the left-hand menu. On the following page select "Go To Settings" on the VIP Hosting account which you want to use. On the page following select "Edit VIP MySQL Settings".

3. You now need to create the database on which you will host the content for your blog. The Database Name will have a unique identifier prefixed to it. Please remember the Database Name is also the Database Username. It is helpful to choose a name which is memorable and relevant to your website as you will need it to install WordPress and to use the application to publish your blog. You should create a password which is no more than 16 characters long, memorable and secure by using a variety of different characters.

4. You will now need to Download WordPress. Once the download is complete please extract WordPress to a location from which it is easy to access and use.

5. You will now need to edit a file named wp-config-sample.php which is in the WordPress directory you extracted in the last step.

•  Firstly, rename the file to wp-config.php
•  You will now need to edit this file in a text editor. There are many free editors available. One which is commonly used is Notepad which is a component of Microsoft Windows. A versatile alternative is Notepad++.
•  Open wp-config.php in your text editor.
•  You will need to edit certain values to ensure WordPress can operate with your database created in step 3.
•  In "define('DB_NAME', 'putyourdbnamehere');" You will need to type your Database Name with the identifier pre-fix.
•  In "define('DB_USER', 'usernamehere');" You will need to type in the same again.
•  In "define('DB_PASSWORD', 'yourpasswordhere')" You will need to type in the password you created in Step 3.
•  In "define('DB_HOST', 'localhost');" This can be left as it is.
•  Now save these changes in your text editor.

6.< You will now need to upload the files and directories in the "wordpress" folder to your "htdocs" in your webspace. For the purposes of the following steps this guide will use FileZilla which is available for download here.

7. For instructions on how to upload using FileZilla please refer to our FTP guide. Please do not close the FTP programme once the files have been uploaded.

8. You will now need to change the File Attributes of the directories in your "htdocs" folder. In FileZilla you simply need to select all at once the directories "wp-admin", "wp-content" and "wp-includes" and then right-click on the highlighted folders. Select "File Attributes...". You need to change the "Numeric value" to 777. You also need to select "Recurse into subdirectories" and select "Apply to directories only" as illustrated below.

9. Once this is complete browse to your website. For this first visit only it should trigger the page below to appear. Put in your Blog Title and E-mail address. You also have the option to have your blog listed in search engines. Once these fields are complete select "Install WordPress".

10. On the following page you are issued your log-in Username and randomly generated password. It is advised that you make a note of this password. Once you have done so select "Log-In".

11. Now use your Username and Password to open the WordPress Dashboard. WordPress has now been successfully installed.

12. For a wealth of Support in using WordPress please visit their forums.

13. To uninstall WordPress simply remove all of the files uploaded in Step 7.
