Web Space: Basic Guide to FTP & Web Space

Freeola, being the wonderful generous ISP it is, offers all our internet connection users UNLIMITED FREE WEB SPACE so you can produce web site masterpieces and show them to the world. As well as giving you unlimited space we also give you cool and meaningful web addresses instead of those naff long site addresses you get from other inferior service providers.

Each Freeola500 address has a corresponding web site address. As an example, if your e-mail address is 'bob@spursfans.com', your corresponding web site address is 'www.bob.spursfans.com'. Another example, if your e-mail address is 'johnsmith@freeola.com', your web address is 'www.johnsmith.freeola.com'.

Alternatively, if you've bought a domain name at GetDotted.com (such as 'tomhoy.com') and hosted it free of charge at Freeola you'll probably want to use this as a web address ('www.tomhoy.com').

A key thing to remember here is that no matter how many Freeola500 addresses or domains you have on your Freeola account, they all point to the same web space. So, if you have 'bob@spursfans.com' and the domain 'tomhoy.com' and they are part of the same Freeola account, visitors to 'www.bob.spursfans.com' and 'www.tomhoy.com' will see the same web pages. If you want different addresses to point to different places just sign up for a different Freeola account.

Now we've got you excited we'd better tell you how to actually put your web pages on the Freeola server. FTP, which stands for File Transfer Protocol, is used for this purpose. Once you've created your web masterpiece on your local hard drive you need an FTP-enabled program to upload the files. There are standalone FTP programs, such as CuteFTP (Download Link) and some web publishing programs like Web Artist have basic FTP clients built in. The two most popular web browsers, Internet Explorer and Netscape Communicator also have simple FTP clients built in. There are many different FTP programs available and we've provided set-up guides to the most popular ones - just click the relevant link below:

Whatever program you use for FTP you will need some important settings and in particular you'll need to know the golden rule that: You can only access your Freeola FTP server if you are connected to the Internet via your Freeola Connection, (0845 604 3070 or 0845 604 3080). If you are connected via a different provider you will receive an error from our server.

Direct FTP Access:
It is now possible to FTP directly into your webspace from MyFreeola. Log in to MyFreeola and click on 'WEB SITES', this will list all your available web space accounts. In section 2, choose the relevant web space and click the "options & FTP settings" button, then click the "web space FTP link" button.

FTP Server Address:
The FTP Server address is the same as the web address you are uploading to. For example, if you are using a Freeola500 address like bob@spursfans.com your FTP Server address would be www.bob.spursfans.com.

Similarly, if you're using a domain name (say www.tomhoy.com), the FTP server address would be www.tomhoy.com.

FTP Server User ID:
This is the same as your Freeola User Name.

FTP Server Password:
This is the same as your Freeola Password

When you first connect to the FTP server, depending on the program you are using, you are placed into a directory called your 'root' directory. If you want, this 'root' directory can be used to store private files as nobody else can access it except you.

Inside the 'root' directory is another sub-directory called 'htdocs'. Any files dropped inside the 'htdocs' directory will be accessible from the World Wide Web so this is the place you want to put your web files.

The following uses the example web address 'www.bob.spursfans.com'...

If you placed a file in the 'htdocs' folder called 'mypage.html', it would be visible to the whole world via the Internet address 'www.bob.spursfans.com/mypage.html'

You can place more folders inside the 'htdocs' folder. So, if you placed a file called 'mypage.html' in a folder called 'mypages' inside the 'htdocs' folder, it would be visible to the whole world via the Internet address 'www.bob.spursfans.com/mypages/mypage.html'.

The Freeola server is case-sensitive which means that if you put a page called 'myPaGe.html' in the 'htdocs' folder, you would have to reference (or link to) it that same way. For example, www.bob.spursfans.com/myPaGe.html would work fine but 'www.bob.spursfans.com/mypage.html' would report a missing page error (because the server is looking for myPaGe.html which just doesn't exist).

If somebody tries to access your site in the normal way by typing 'www.bob.spursfans.com' the server will look for a page called 'index.html' or 'index.php' in the 'htdocs' directory. Therefore, 'index.html' or 'index.php' is what you should always call the first (index) page you want people to see when they type your web site address. Note the lower-case requirement for this filename.

The Freeola server allows you to use the programming/scripting language PHP for advanced web pages. This is a major benefit and there is no extra charge for this powerful service. Filenames need to end with '.php' for PHP processing to take place. If your first (index) page requires PHP processing be sure to use 'index.php' as the filename. PHP is described in more detail here.

The Freeola server also supports SSI and CGI scripting/applications but does not support the use of Microsoft Front Page Server Extensions.
