Web Space: Upload Guide For CuteFTP

CuteFTP is one of the most popular FTP programs in use on the Internet. This guide shows you how to use CuteFTP with your Freeola Web Space

1. Download and install CuteFTP from www.cuteftp.com.

2. Click on the CuteFTP shortcut icon on your Desktop to launch the program.

3. Close the 'Tip Of The Day' window and you will be presented with the 'Site Manager' window. Click on the 'Wizard' button.

4. In the 'Choose Your ISP' window, select 'Other' and click on 'Next'.

5. Enter a label for the site (e.g. 'My Freeola Web Space') and click 'Next'.

6. In the 'FTP Host Address' text box enter your web site address you are uploading to. As explained in this pop-up window, your web site address and FTP Host Address are the same thing.

7. Enter your User Name in the 'User Name' text box and Connection Password in the 'Password' text box and then Click 'Next'.

8. Click 'Browse' and select the directory that contains your web pages, click 'OK' followed by 'Next'.

9. Click on the 'Connect to this site automatically' checkbox and click 'Finish'.

10. A Dial-up Connection window will now appear. Select your Freeola account and click 'Connect'.

IMPORTANT: You must connect to the internet using a Freeola internet connection. If you attempt to connect via any other service provider you will receive an error message and upload will not be possible.

If you need to use another provider's connection then you can sign up to our "Web Freedom" package from your MyFreeola account.

11. The directory you selected in step 8 is now displayed on the left side of the CuteFTP screen (local files) and you should be able to see the pages you wish to wish to upload listed here. On the right hand side of the screen you will see your web space (remote files). There should be a folder called 'htdocs' listed here.

12. Select the files you want to upload and drag them over to the htdocs folder, remembering that your default page (the first page that people see when they visit your web site address) should be called index.html (note the lower case). All files and folders you create must go into the 'htdocs' folder, with the exception of CGI scripts (when required) which should go in the 'cgi-shl' directory.

13. To view the web page(s) you have uploaded simply open your browser and type in your web address. As explained in the Basic Guide to FTP & Web Space, your web address will either be based on any of your Freeola1000 addresses or your own Domain Name. For example, the e-mail address 'bob@spursfans.com' translates to the web address of 'www.bob.spursfans.com'. Similarly, if you have your own domain hosted at Freeola (for example, 'tomhoy.com') the web address would be 'www.tomhoy.com'.

A Few Words About CuteHTML
With your CuteFTP package you also have the option of using CuteHTML to create and edit your web site. CuteHTML operates on an HTML editing basis and therefore some HTML knowledge is necessary. Once you load CuteHTML you will notice that a framework of tags have already been entered for the new page you are creating. These form the basis of your page and whenever you add a new page to your site it will start with this template.

There are various ways you can edit your page content using the toolbar like adding pictures, changing the text etc. The extensive help file covers the use of these tools and the text window.

Once you have created a web site save it to a folder with CuteHTML. Check that your default page to be shown when people type your web address is called 'index.html' then use CuteFTP to publish your site to the internet as above.
