Uploading to Freeola using CuteFTP

Welcome to the Freeola Internet customer support pages. This guide is designed to help with uploading your website via FTP using CuteFTP for any Freeola hosted website. For more internet help topics please visit our main Support Page.

In order to upload files to any Freeola hosted website you will need to access your FREE webspace via FTP. Most, if not all, web design programs feature an element of FTP uploading but it is always advisable, and more stable, to upload using one of many FTP clients available. This page gives brief instructions on one of these, CuteFTP.

Before you start with the FTP upload please ensure at this point that you have your Freeola internet connection currently connected or your domain name is signed up for our VIP Hosting service. For further information on uploading via FTP please read our Basic Guide to FTP and Web Space.

1. CuteFTP is a paid-for FTP client but a 30 Day free trial can be downloaded from www.cuteftp.com. Once installed an icon will appear within your Start menu and Desktop.

2. In order to launch the program you will need to double click the desktop icon. This resembles a folder with a smiley face.

3. Once the program has loaded a new, smaller, window will open headed 'Site Manager'. If this is your first time using CuteFTP to connect to your Freeola web space you will need to first select the 'New' option from this window, this will open a drop-down menu.

4. From this drop-down menu select 'FTP Site'. The Site Manager window will update and give you the option of entering in to the following fields: Label, Host address, Username, Password, Comments and Login Method.

5. In order to upload files to the web server you will first need the FTP server, username and password. If you do not already have this information to hand it is available from within your MyFreeola account by selecting 'My Websites' from the left-hand menu.

6. The Label and Comments fields have no bearing on how the program will connect to your web space. However, I would advise you label your website something memorable and unqiue from any other sites you may upload to. For example, your domain name or web address would be advisable to be entered as a domain label.

7. In the Host Address field enter the web server name your web site is hosted on. The hostname will be in the form of 'freeolawebX.freeola.net' (vipX.freeola.net for VIP Hosting customers).

8. Enter your FTP username within the Username field. The FTP username will vary depending on your Freeola hosting package, VIP Hosting customers will have a username in the form of vip0000000 whilst other customers will have an sr number username. The password for your FTP space needs to be entered within the Password field, Login Method must be set to 'Normal' to finalise the authentication.

9. Once all of the information has been entered correctly click the 'Connect' button. The site manager window will be briefly replaced by a smaller connecting window. If successfully connected your Freeola webspace will appear in the large space on the right-hand side of the program.

10. On the left-hand side of the program will be your 'Local' folders (i.e. the files and folders currently saved on your system). Navigating as you would normally you will need to find the files you wish to upload.

11. In order to begin the upload you will be required to select the files you want to upload in the left-hand window and drag them over to the htdocs folder on the right-hand side. Please note that your default page (the first page that people see when they visit your web site address) should be called index.html (or .php for PHP files), this file needs to be lowercase. All files and folders you wish to be displayed on your website need to be uploaded in the htdocs folder.

12. Once the files are appearing within the right-hand side of the program the upload will be complete, closing the program will save these changes to the webspace. To view the web page(s) you have uploaded open your chosen internet browser and type in your web address, if uploaded correctly your site will display on-screen.
