If you have a particular interest or problem, newsgroups give you access to information from literally thousands of like-minded individuals. A newsgroup is basically a publicly hosted forum, in which the designated subject is open for discussion to anyone with an interest. Freeola's news servers offer access to all the thousands of newsgroups available for discussion. Where you go and what you talk about is up to you!
To look through newgroups you need to use either Netscape Communicator, Outlook Express or any of the specialist news reader programs. We've covered the first two programs here to get you started.
Using Outlook Express As Your Newsreader
Go to the Tools menu in your Outlook Express window.
Click on Accounts
Go to Add and click on News... in the sub-menu.
Decide what name you would like displayed for your comments in news groups and an e-mail address you would like replies sent to. Enter these in the relevant boxes and then click Next to continue.
Type news.freeola.net into the News (NNTP) server field and click Next. You do not need a password to use Freeola's news servers. Please note, you must be connected to the Internet via your Freeola Connection. If you attempt to connect to the News server via another provider you will receive an error message.
Follow the on-screen prompts and click Yes when asked if you want to download the news groups. This will take approximately 10 minutes depending on the speed of your connection.
Once the newsgroups have downloaded you should be able to find your way around from here.
Using Netscape As Your Newsreader
Go to the Edit menu and click on Preferences.
In the subject listing in the left-hand window find the Mail & Newsgroup heading.
Click on News Server.
Click Add and enter 'news.freeola.net' in the Host field. Click OK.
You can now manage any aspect of your newsgroups by double clicking on the news.freeola.net icon that is now in your Netscape Messenger window.
