Dial up settings & modem set up for Windows 98 or Windows 95

Here are full instructions for setting up a Dial Up Networking (DUN) Connection on your Windows 98 or 95 machine and how to configure your modem settings. Please note that there may be some minor variations between the two versions of Windows.

1. Double-click the 'My Computer' icon located on your Desktop.

2. Double-click on 'Dial-Up Networking'.

4. Select your modem type and give the connection a name you will easily remember (such as Freeola or My Internet). Click the 'Next' button.

5. At the prompt type in the dial up internet phone number, 0845 604 3080 or 0845 604 3070 (whichever works best for you) and click 'Next'.

If you are using Freeola Anytime then please use the number 0808 993 3413.

6. Check that the name of the dial up connection is okay then click 'Finish'. This will create an icon in your Dial-Up Networking folder with that name.

7. The following optional stage may speed up modem connecting times but there is no obligation to complete this stage. Right-click on the connection icon you just created and choose 'Properties', this will open the connection properties box. Click on the 'Servers' tab and untick 'Log on to Network', 'NETBUI' and 'IPX'. You should ONLY have 'Enable Software Compression' and 'TCP/IP' ticked. Click 'OK'.

8. To connect to Freeola using the connection you just created, double-click its icon in My Computer -> Dial-Up Networking folder.

9. At this stage you are asked for a Freeola User name and a Freeola Password. If you have already signed up to Freeola you should enter your Freeola User Name and your Freeola Password. Tick the box that says 'Save Password' otherwise you'll need to enter it everytime you connect.

If you haven't signed up to Freeola yet, just use the Username of 'freeola' and Password of 'freeola' for immediate free and fast web access. Please note that the freeola/freeola combination only supports web browsing - it does not allow you to send or receive e-mail and some other services may be disabled.

10. Click 'Connect' to dial-up to the Internet and then load a browser program such as Netscape or Microsoft Internet Explorer or an e-mail program such as Microsoft Outlook Express.
